Establishment Labs adds a futuristic twist to the silicone gel implant
A company based in Florida and Belgium has developed a new silicone implant that will be able to tell you and your doctor everything from the serial number to its physical condition after it has already been placed. While these implants have not yet been FDA approved for breast augmentation in the US, the new innovation will surely spark other breast implant manufacturers to do the same.
Establishment Labs has been working on adding a new silicone implant embedded with a radio frequency identification (RFID) microchip. The microchip will allow doctors to easily acquire information about the implants after they have been placed. With a simple scan using a handheld device, the doctor would have access to information such as the breast implant’s serial number, manufacturer and its physical condition to diagnose any problems.
From the silicone gel gummy bear implants from earlier this year to these new microchip implants, medical companies are striving to make the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the country even better.
Juan Jose Chacon-Quiros, CEO of Establishment Labs, says that the use of microchips is intended to give “women the power of verification and control throughout the life of the device, if they choose to have breast implants.”
Establishment Labs is likely just the beginning of manufacturers working on a new wave of futuristic implants that could make their way to the United States in the next few years. Who knows, they may even create an app for your iPhone to sync up with the microchip in your implants.
