You’ve met for your consultation, scheduled your breast procedure with your surgeon, and are ready to go! So what now? You may have a few weeks before your actual surgical date. During this time, there are some important steps you can take to prepare.

Maintaining good nutrition with a healthy, balanced diet is essential. Good fitness habits, such as upper body stretches and low-weight strength training can help as well – just don’t overdo it. If you are a tobacco smoker, stop smoking for at least four weeks before/after surgery (even longer is better) to minimize any complications.

On the day of surgery, you will likely feel groggy and sore after waking up in the recovery room. You may feel tight around the surgical area once the anesthesia wears off. You may also have some bruising or swelling, or experience nipple sensitivity, tingling, and general discomfort. These symptoms can be alleviated with pain medication and cold compresses. During the first 24-48 hours post-surgery, your focus should be on helping your body heal by resting, taking naps, and relying on family or friends to help you perform simple tasks. It’s also important to follow your surgeon’s instructions which may include ice packs, medication, or a specially designed compression garment or bra.

By the end of the first week, most patients have a noticeable decrease in bruising, swelling, and discomfort and are able to return to everyday activities (with no lifting or strenuous physical activity). In the following weeks, there will be even more of a decrease in your discomfort, bruising and swelling, although you may experience mild soreness. You should still avoid strenuous activity or sports for at least six weeks following your surgery.

After approximately 2-3 months, most patients are fully cleared to resume all normal activities. The swelling will go away, and you can resize yourself for new bras. You will experience subtle changes in your breasts, and the scars will continue to lighten and fade.

While there is no ‘perfect time’ for your surgery, you may want to consider planning your breast surgery 3-6 months before a big event or vacation, so you can enjoy your new figure.
