IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BREASTS & BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

Robinson10-3 Breast-Cancer

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many women will be taking precautionary steps with a mammogram, others will be undergoing chemotherapy, some may undergo a mastectomy, and others will be looking into breast reconstruction options.

With breast cancer being the second leading cause of death among women, it’s important to know what steps you should take toward your breast health, safety, and revitalization.

Many women dread going in for a mammogram because of the possibility of hearing those dreaded words after. However, a mammogram is the most proactive measure a woman can take in early detection and prevention. Here are a few things you should know about mammograms this year.

WHY YOU NEED TO BE HAVING REGULAR MAMMOGRAMS

  • Self-checks are important, but lumps cannot always be felt by hand. A deeper scan can detect things that would otherwise go missed.
  • On average, mammograms, on average, take 20 minutes.
  • Set an example. Be a role model.
  • Did we mention it’s the second-leading cause of death among women?
  • Catching cancer early can mean the difference between beating your cancer and not.

HOW YOU CAN ENSURE MAMMOGRAM RESULTS

When going in for your mammogram, most women aren’t aware that they can actually do something to help with the outcome of the results. Wearing certain items can actually prevent an accurate reading, so when you go in for a mammogram, make sure that you aren’t wearing any of the following items.

  • Deodorant
  • Lotion
  • Powder
  • Perfume
  • Jewelry

WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER AFTER BREAST CANCER

It’s important to be proactive about breast cancer awareness, but what happens if you are diagnosed? Do you know of your options following a mastectomy?

For breast cancer survivors, breast reconstruction is usually the next step. Breast reconstruction patients approach breast implants with a very different mindset than most breast augmentation patients. There is a whole reconstruction aspect that typically involves several surgeries that include different flap procedures or tissue expansions before implants can be placed.
