Breast Augmentation Women who desire larger breasts may wish to have a breast enlargement (augmentation) procedure. Breast augmentation may also be indicated for women who have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other. Breast augmentation is intended to give the patient larger, shapelier breasts and commonly results in a more positive self-image.
Breast augmentation is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. A small incision is made under the breast and a saline or silicone breast implant is inserted under the breast tissue or under the breast tissue and the underlying muscle. The patient goes home in an elastic bra. The bra helps hold the breasts in the correct position. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral pain medication. Sutures are placed under the skin and do not need to be removed. Light activities can be resumed as tolerated and aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks. Moving or sliding the implants within the breast pockets during the postoperative period may reduce the frequency of wrinkling. Who is an ideal candidate for breast augmentation? If you have ever experienced one or more of the following:
Remember that the more you increase from your original cup size, the less natural your breasts may appear in proportion to your body. Where are the incisions made during breast augmentation surgery? Your incisions will vary depending on the type and size of implant you choose and how you are shaped. Generally, incisions are made either under the breast in the existing crease or around the nipple/areola complex. It is also possible to place incisions in the armpit or belly button. However, if a complication occurs, it may be necessary to place a new incision under the breast or around the nipple/areola. What is the recovery like following breast augmentation? Immediately after breast augmentation surgery, you will probably experience swelling and some discomfort. Dr. Robinson will prescribe a pain medication to alleviate any pain or discomfort and will recommend that you wear a support bra for a few weeks. Depending on your discomfort, you may be able to resume work after as little as three days. It is important to remember that the full results may not be evident for several months as your body adjusts and heals.
