Breast implants are not lifetime medical devices. Patients who undergo breast augmentation can reasonably expect to remove and replace their implants at some point. But is there a right time to do so, and what happens if you keep the same implants for many years? Keep reading to find out.

When to Replace Breast Implants

You may have heard that implants need to be replaced after 10 years. That is a misconception. The idea likely came from the manufacturer’s warranty on breast implants, which is often valid for the same length of time. When your warranty runs out, it just means that the manufacturer will no longer pay to replace your implants. The manufacturer may, however, replace your implants free of charge under certain circumstances. This may extend for the lifespan of your implants.

In reality, there is no set time to replace breast implants. It is common for saline or silicone implants to have a lifespan of anywhere from 10 to 20 years, though they can last longer. You only need to replace your implants if you are experiencing an issue.

Here are some of the top reasons to replace breast implants:

  • Aesthetic concerns: Many women simply wish to change the size of their implants. However, implant replacement can also correct cosmetic issues such as rippling or a change in breast position.

  • Implant rupture: Saline and silicone implants can deflate if the outer shell becomes damaged. It is advisable to remove ruptured implants and replace them with new ones.

  • Capsular contracture: This is the term for hardened scar tissue that can develop around one or both implants, causing discomfort or cosmetic changes. The scar tissue can be removed during implant replacement.

Consequences of Not Replacing Breast Implants

Some women keep their original implants for their entire lives and are completely satisfied. However, not replacing implants in situations where it is medically indicated can have consequences.

For example, a silicone rupture can cause your breasts to feel tight or uncomfortable. This is a concern that should be addressed.
